What Happened

They routed federal agencies at me for reporting the truth

≈13 min read

I was a journalist covering the Maxwell and Epstein ecosystem when a coordinated campaign turned me into a federal danger subject. This is the full account of what happened, what it cost, and what I have to show for it.

My name is Troy Raymond Barile and I live in Las Vegas, Nevada, with my husband Shawn. For the past year I have been an investigative journalist reporting on the networks that manage survivors, suppress stories, and protect powerful people from accountability. In the spring of 2026, the machine I had been reporting on came for me, and what followed was the most terrifying and isolating stretch of my life. I survived it because I kept the receipts.

What I was doing before this started

THE MACHINE was the name of my investigative series on Substack, published through The Fallout with TBS. By the time it was suspended it had reached 71 parts. The reporting covered survivor-space management patterns, the intake-and-control networks that form around Epstein and Maxwell survivors, and the people who profit from controlling what survivors say and who they say it to.

I had been working on this since before anyone was paying attention. I documented how survivors get routed, how their stories get managed, how advocacy organizations become gatekeeping structures, and how the people running those structures respond when a journalist starts naming what he sees.

I also had direct relationships with people inside the story. I spoke with Anouska De Georgiou, a Maxwell trial witness, dozens of times by phone. We texted and messaged regularly. I had an ongoing relationship with Maria Farmer. I was connected to other survivors and sources across the space. That access is part of why I became a problem.

I reported under my real name, on a public platform, with my face attached to every story, and I was not anonymous, not in hiding, and not doing anything that required concealment.

The Maxwell lane I was inside without knowing it

What I did not fully understand until later is that my reporting had placed me inside an active legal pressure field. Ghislaine Maxwell's post-conviction attorneys were, according to public records, pursuing a §2255 petition in the Southern District of New York. A §2255 petition is a post-conviction challenge. It requires arguing that the original conviction was fundamentally defective. One way to make that argument is to challenge the credibility of witnesses who testified against Maxwell.

Anouska De Georgiou testified at Maxwell's trial. I had a direct ongoing relationship with Anouska. I had been publicly challenging claims that were being made about her credibility. I had reported on the pressure around her.

A preserved screenshot shows a February 6, 2026 email from Samantha Harris to David Oscar Markus at Markus Law, with the subject line "Anouska De Georgiou." In that email, Samantha says she knew Anouska personally in the mid-1990s, that Anouska testified at the client's trial, that Anouska lied, and that she should be exposed. David Oscar Markus is Maxwell's attorney. That email predates the May public packaging of Samantha's Anouska story by three months.

Then on May 31, in an audio recording I preserved, Samantha says it plainly: "Just face it, we got this from the attorneys." And when someone asks about Leah, she says: "Leah's not my fucking lawyer. Leah is Ghislaine Maxwell's lawyer."

I am a journalist with direct ongoing access to a Maxwell trial witness. The effort to discredit that witness was being run through Maxwell's own defense attorney. I was inside that lane, and I could contradict it from primary source contact. That made me useful to remove.

How it escalated

I had been reporting on Lisa Noelle Voldeng and George Tonks for months. Lisa ran what I documented as a survivor intake and management network. George was a source I spoke with regularly, a person I recorded because I knew what he did with information. Neither of them were allies. They were subjects and sources. I kept recordings because I learned early that things get misrepresented when you do not.

In May 2026, the pressure around me went from professional to physical.

On May 24, Jennifer Engelsma, operating publicly as "Texas Grumble," posted a TikTok video naming me and Anne Cheever. "You should panic, Troy and Anne. You're in the Epstein files, brah." She said it publicly, with my name in it, to an audience of people who already thought I was a dangerous person. That video is on this site. You can watch it.

The same day, audio naming Homeland Security, the FBI, and the Secret Service circulated. Public amplification and private agency-routing were happening in parallel, not sequentially.

Three days that changed everything

On May 28, I received a phone contact from Homeland Security. The allegation that had entered the system was not ordinary. I was told that it involved a claim that I wanted to assassinate the President of the United States and other high officials, with names written on bullets. I have audio of that call. It has not been released publicly yet because it is being reviewed for legal proceedings. But it exists, and it will be part of the record.

On May 29, Secret Service agents came to my home. My husband Shawn was there. Let me be clear about what that means. A man whose husband was already afraid, already watching his platform get attacked, already trying to keep a record of everything, came home to find federal agents at the door. The danger was no longer abstract. It was at my house.

On May 30, I met with federal agents in person. I cooperated fully. I answered every question. I gave them context about my reporting, the evidence I had preserved, and why the claims being made about me were false. At the end of that meeting, I was told the allegations against me were not credible. I was told to keep writing.

I have not received a written record of that determination. I do not have a case number, a clearance letter, or a documented outcome from the May 30 meeting. That gap is not trivial. Without a written record, the claim that I was investigated and cleared cannot be confirmed. The agencies know what happened. I am asking for the record to be complete.

What the recordings confirm

George Tonks recorded himself two days after the agency visits. In those recordings, confirmed on this site and open to the public, he says: "Troy would never come up with that list that she claims popped up from Substack. He didn't do anything. They just came to his door, and the FBI, and then the following day, Homeland Security."

He also says on tape that Samantha Harris called U.S. Homeland Security from South Africa. His disbelief is audible: "Yes, I called the U.S. Homeland Security. Where are you located right now? South Africa. What the fuck are you calling U.S. Homeland Security for?"

And in the Samantha Harris recording, password-protected on this site because it names Maxwell's attorney, she says at 0:29:43: "Homeland Security. FBI. Did you call the Homeland Security on him? They want him to basically FUCKING watch his mouth."

That is exactly what they wanted from me, and they routed that message through federal agencies to make sure I heard it.

What they said about me publicly

While federal agents were at my door, the public campaign was telling people I was dangerous, mentally ill, medically compromised, and eligible for involuntary commitment.

George Tonks published posts pairing claims that I was under authority monitoring and a threat with disclosures about my HIV status and assertions about my mental health. He expressed hope that I would be involuntarily committed. He posted about my husband Shawn. He posted about my family. That material is in the evidence archive and it is being handled as a protected medical disclosure and a public credibility-destruction exhibit.

Samantha Harris told Molly Skye Brown that Molly was schizophrenic, based on what Lisa Noelle Voldeng had told her. The same technique used on me was used on anyone who stood with me. Molly says it in her own voice in the recordings on this site: "Samantha told me that I'm schizophrenic, based on what Lisa Noelle Voldeng told her."

When you want to make evidence disappear before anyone reads it, you make the evidence-holder disappear first. You call them unstable, dangerous, medically impaired, delusional, criminal. You get them removed from their platforms. You contact their employers. Then when the evidence comes out, the first question becomes whether the messenger can be trusted. They were building the answer to that question before I had finished gathering the evidence.

June 9 - the day it all converged

On June 9, 2026, Substack suspended The Fallout with TBS.

71 parts of THE MACHINE. The Living Library series. Dozens of standalone reports. A year of documented investigative work. All of it became inaccessible overnight. My appeal was filed and denied. My income from that platform stopped. The audience I had spent a year building could no longer find me through the publication where I had built it.

I did not know when my publication went down that June 9 was also the final reply deadline in Maxwell's §2255 petition. I found that in the court docket afterward. The convergence is documented and factual. Whether there is a causal connection is a question for attorneys, investigators, and people with access to both the platform records and the court docket. What I can say is that the two things happened on the same day, and that the pattern of what surrounded them requires professional review.

They went after my editors too

My editors at WhoWhatWhy received a hostile email. The email claimed I had threatened journalists and political figures, made threats against the President, was interviewed by Secret Service and FBI and other law enforcement, was radicalized, and was raising money on behalf of criminal behavior. The email appeared to come from an address associated with me and Anne Cheever, and the sender claimed to be my husband Shawn.

Shawn did not send that email. Shawn was dealing with his mother's lung cancer diagnosis while all of this was happening. The people who used his name to try to destroy my professional standing did that while he was watching his family go through something devastating.

The WhoWhatWhy editor told me the message smelled wrong and they would not respond to it. The editor recognized it as not credible. That response is in my evidence archive. It is the only reason that particular attempt failed: because the editor had the judgment to recognize a smear when it arrived in their inbox.

What all of this cost

I am afraid for my husband Shawn and I am afraid for myself. There were moments in May and June when I did not know if I would be arrested, hospitalized, or worse. I had federal agents at my door. I had people publicly saying I was a danger who needed to be removed from society. I had my income cut off. I had my archive made inaccessible. I was doing all of this while trying to preserve evidence, route it to the right places, and keep the record intact.

I did not stop then and I am not going to stop now, but I want people to understand what it actually cost to refuse to stop.

It cost me the platform I spent a year building. It cost me my income from that platform. It pulled my husband into the center of a smear campaign while his mother was sick. It subjected me to public claims about my medical status, my mental health, and my fitness to exist in public. It sent federal agents to my home. It put my name in a protected-person threat allegation that will follow me in every federal database it touched, regardless of whether anyone ever proves it was false.

The people who did this did not do it because I was dangerous. They did it because I was credible, I was connected, I had direct access to a Maxwell trial witness, and I had the evidence to say publicly what they needed to keep private.

What I have to show for it

I have original audio. I have the recordings. I have George Tonks in his own voice saying Lisa was behind this. I have Samantha Harris in her own voice naming Maxwell's attorney and saying Homeland Security was called to make me watch my mouth. I have Molly Skye Brown independently reaching the same conclusions I did from a different city. I have Lady Victoria Hervey on tape discussing keeping people quiet and holding the narrative. I have the WhoWhatWhy editor's response. I have the Substack suspension notice. I have the timeline of the Maxwell §2255 docket. I have screenshots, transcripts, call records, and the preserved record of three days of federal contact.

I have more than they thought I would.

This site is the public spine of that archive. The full record is in the hands of people who know what to do with it: legal counsel, congressional contacts, and journalists who review evidence before they publish.

I am not asking anyone to take my word for any of this. I am asking them to review the record.

The people who made this possible

I did not get through this alone. Sherry fought for justice every step of the way and deserves her own story told in full. She is a survivor who has been in the trenches of this longer than almost anyone, and her commitment to truth and accountability for the real victims is what serious advocacy looks like. Molly Skye Brown showed up when it mattered, spoke the truth in her own voice, and became a target for the same reason I did. Elle, who appears in the transcripts as Chemist, Alchemist, and Elle Candace, amplified this work from Italy and became a target alongside me. Interpol and Secret Service were aimed at her too. Shawn held everything together while his mother was sick and while federal agents were at our door. Jana and Ashleigh were there. Maria Farmer showed up when Ellie and Anne tried to use her against me and it backfired, completely.

And when it comes to Anouska, she is still here, still willing to speak the truth, and her continued presence is exactly why the people trying to silence this story needed me gone before I could tell it.

Support this work

I built this after they took my income.

The Substack suspension cut off the platform and income I spent a year building. The legal work, the evidence preservation, and the continued reporting all have real costs. If you think this is credible and worth continuing, I need your support to keep going.
